Why More Cypriots Are Choosing Outdoor Weekend Adventures Over Foreign Holidays
Long airport queues, expensive flights, and months of planning are no longer the only way to enjoy a refreshing getaway. Across Cyprus, more people are choosing short outdoor escapes that offer adventure, relaxation, and a chance to reconnect with nature—without ever leaving the island.
Travel experts describe this growing trend as “darecations” and “micro-adventures”: short trips focused on outdoor activities, physical challenges, and discovering hidden places close to home.
From mountain biking and rock climbing to hiking, camping, and nature-based experiences, outdoor tourism operators say they have seen a noticeable rise in the number of local participants over the past few years.
According to Andreas Tsokkalides, founder of EcoTour Adventures, the shift became especially apparent after the pandemic.
“Since COVID-19, more Cypriots have started exploring their own country for the first time. At the same time, many foreign residents are also becoming curious about Cyprus beyond the well-known tourist attractions,” he says.
He notes that many people are now visiting remote nature trails, forests, and natural landmarks they had never known existed. Families are increasingly bringing their children along, encouraging a new generation to appreciate the island’s natural beauty.
Adventure Over Destinations
Adventure Mountain Park in Kyperounta has witnessed the same trend. According to the park’s team, more Cypriots are looking for outdoor experiences that can easily fit into a day trip or weekend break.
Rather than simply visiting a destination, many people now want memorable experiences.
“Locals are realizing that beautiful scenery, exciting adventures, and meaningful experiences don’t necessarily require travelling abroad.”
Visitors often arrive with the goal of escaping daily routines, spending quality time with family, and taking a break from technology.
Many are choosing to disconnect from screens, become more physically active, and enjoy experiences that are completely different from everyday life.
A Diverse Island Within Easy Reach
One of the biggest advantages Cyprus offers is its incredible variety of landscapes within a relatively small area.
Within just an hour’s drive from the island’s major cities, visitors can exchange busy roads for forests, mountain villages, rugged coastlines, and peaceful countryside.
The Troodos Mountains alone provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, camping, rock climbing, and archery. Adventure Mountain Park also offers activities such as e-mountain bike tours, orienteering, Tyrolean traverse adventures, and forest puzzle challenges.
Meanwhile, EcoTour Adventures organizes guided 4×4 expeditions into remote areas such as the Akamas Peninsula and Paphos Forest, locations that are difficult to access with conventional vehicles.
“There are hundreds of kilometres of nature trails suitable for every level of experience,” Tsokkalides explains. “People are also becoming increasingly interested in kayaking, canoeing, and independent hiking using navigation apps.”
Rediscovering Cyprus
Outdoor operators believe these experiences are changing the way people view the island.
Many visitors are discovering hidden villages, scenic mountain trails, dense forests, and breathtaking landscapes they had never explored before, gaining a deeper appreciation for the remarkable diversity Cyprus has to offer.
The Mental Benefits Matter Most
While stunning scenery initially attracts visitors, operators say the greatest reward is often how people feel afterward.
Adventure Mountain Park notes that guests frequently leave physically tired but mentally refreshed.
“Nature has a unique ability to simplify life. Time spent outdoors shifts people’s focus away from emails, deadlines, and everyday responsibilities.”
Activities such as cycling, climbing, and navigating through forests require concentration, encouraging participants to stay present in the moment. Combined with fresh air and physical exercise, these experiences often create a lasting sense of calm, clarity, and wellbeing.
Building Confidence Through Adventure
For the guides at Climb Hike Cyprus, some of the most rewarding moments come from watching people overcome fears they have carried for years.
Many participants arrive convinced they could never climb a rock face or believing their fear of heights would stop them.
By the end of the day, however, many have achieved something they once thought impossible.
“People leave standing a little taller, smiling a little more, and carrying a renewed sense of confidence.”
If asked to recommend just one adventure in Cyprus, the guides unanimously choose rock climbing.
They believe climbing offers a completely different perspective of the island, particularly in Akamas, where climbers are rewarded with panoramic views over Lara Bay, surrounded only by birdsong, sea breeze, and untouched coastal landscapes.
A New Way to Escape
As international travel becomes increasingly expensive and busy lifestyles leave little room for long vacations, many Cypriots are proving that a memorable getaway doesn’t always require a passport.
Sometimes, the best adventure begins just around the corner—with a willingness to step outside, explore, and experience Cyprus in a completely new way.
